Piece from Montecassino monastery

Saint Leo Abbey is one of the many Benedictine monasteries that traces its origins to Saint Benedict and his founding of Montecassino monastery in about A.D. 530.

The piece in the picture no doubt dates from many centuries after Saint Benedict's original work.  Montecassino has been destroyed five times in its long history, Lombards ca. 585, by the Saracens in 884, by the Normans in 1046, by an earthquake in 1349, and during World War II in 1944.  Source.
